Naples, the capital of the Campania region, lies in southern Italy on the Bay of Naples at the foot of Vesuvius. With a population of 922 thousand, it is Italy's third largest city. Famed for its rich history, it was founded by the Greeks and was an important cultural centre of Magna Graecia. Since the Middle Ages it has been regarded as one of Europe's key cultural hubs. It is best visited in spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and there are fewer tourists. Naples delights with landmarks such as the cathedral of San Gennaro and Castel Nuovo.
